Ask Agaric: Dvorak on a Mac

Description & Info:

also, i have a mac, how do i get the keyboard on a mac?

Dvorak on a Mac:

Click that silly apple symbol at the top left, click System Preferences...

First line, Personal, click International, and then Input Menu.

Check Character Palette and Keyboard Viewer to turn both on.

Scroll down the alphabetical list of languages to Dvorak and select the FIRST Dvorak (not Dvorak - Qwerty)

Allow a different input source for each document has worked for me, but I'll switch it to Use one for all documents and see how that goes.

Check Show input in menu bar

Close the panel, you're done.

Click the little U.S. flag that appears in your menu bar, and switch it to the black-and-white DV if it isn't that already.

Congratulations, now you're becoming part of at least two cults!

hi ben,

remember you were telling me about how you changed your keyboard settings to an easier one. i have two requests

1. what is the name of the keyboard setting
2. where do i find a picture of which key is what

Heh heh... another member for the cult.

In Windows it's under "Regional and Language" (or something like that)
settings, I think.

Then I think it's English and Keyboard Layout - Dvorak.

I always set up keyboard shortcuts so CTRL+SHIFT+1 goes to Dvorak, and
CTRL+SHIFT+2 goes back to normal. And then I forget to set it back to
normal and screw up anyone who uses a computer after me. :-)

Here's one image:

It will of course be much *harder* at first. Like, for a month. Or two if
you don't type much. But you will learn to touch type (not looking at the
keyboard) because, well, if you do look at your keyboard it will be lying to
you.

Good luck!

dvorak on my macbook

I made the switch a few months ago (I popped all my little keys off and everything) and I'm loving it. Not only from the home-row key advantage, but also from the joy I get when I see peoples' faces as they realize my true and unwavering geekiness haha
